If England ever want to land up with the World Cup trophy this is their best chance. Eoin Morgan at his disposal has a potent batting unit that can outscore any team on a given day. If batting depth was a parameter even No.11 in this English team has the ability to cause real damage. Hosting the tournament, most experts have placed their bet on the Englishmen to win the title this time.

Squad: Eoin Morgan (C), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Jos Buttler (vc & wk), Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

The Indian cricket team champions of the 2011 edition go into the tournament as one of the prime favourites to end up with the title. Led by Virat Kohli, the team has amazing firepower in both batting as well as bowling departments. Ranked No.2 in ODI rankings at the moment, the team certainly has most boxes ticked to go all the way in the tournament.

Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik (wk), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja

South Africa

South Africa have always come into the tournament as a contender but never staked that claim in an ICC tournament. Faf du Plessis has all the resource at his disposal, there certainly is the talent, potential and hunger in his team to play their best cricket and end up on the podium. Can they bury the ghosts of the past and write history? It’ll take real character and nerves of steel in the crunch moments for them to be able to do that.

Squad: Faf du Plessis (C), Quinton de Kock (vc & wk), David Miller, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi

New Zealand

The runners-up of World Cup 2015 edition, a lot has changed for New Zealand since then. Kane Williamson is the mainstay of the batting and has been leading the team well. The guns in their batting line-up will enjoy the conditions and flat pitches in England. It will, however, be a test of their bowling attack who relish favourable conditions. Not a lot of people are talking about the Kiwis and that could be their opportunity.

Squad: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell (wk), Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (wk), Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee (vc), Ross Taylor

Defending champions don’t have a lot of pressure on them. Even staunch fans of Australian cricket are keeping expectations low from the team led by Aaron Finch. They were emerging into a force a year and a half ago, that’s when one incident shattered almost all the good work. Smith and Warner are back but does that make things normal? It remains to be seen.

Squad: Aaron Finch (C), Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey (vc & wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s team, the winners of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 is considered a dangerous team as there is a tremendous sense of uncertainty surrounding them. Pakistan suffered two majors defeats at the hands of Australia in the UAE and England in England by a 5-0 and 4-0 margins leading into the tournament. However, on their day the Men in Green are capable of turning the tables even against the best.

Squad: Sarfaraz Ahmed (C & wk), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik (vc), Mohammad Hafeez, Haris Sohail, Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Hasnain

Bangladesh have won everything but the trophy in the last few major tournaments, they staged major upsets against India and England in the last three editions of the World Cup to abruptly end their journey. This time Mashrafe Mortaza’s team will want to do a lot more than that. With a Tri-Series win fresh in memory, they have quite a lot to prove in England this time.

Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Shakib Al Hasan (vc), Mohammad Mithun (wk), Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mehidy Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Jayed

One common term used to describe Windies all these years has been ‘Dark horses’ they’ve not performed any better in 50-overs cricket to alter that. But Jason Holder certainly has the raw power in his hands and would be a matter of how they channelize it. Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Shai Hope is all the ammunition one would want in a batting side but World Cup cricket is about a lot more than that and pulling it off will be their challenge here.

Jason Holder (c), Evin Lewis, Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Nicholas Pooran, Oshane Thomas, Shai Hope (wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Fabien Allen, Sheldon Cottrell, Shannon Gabriel, Kemar Roach, Ashley Nurse

Sri Lanka

They were the finalists in two successive World Cups in 2007 and 2011, lost both and things have only got worse with time. Sri Lanka didn’t have a set line-up not even a certain captain in place, the selectors had to pull Dimuth Karunaratne out of the hat and appoint him the skipper. Realistically their aim should be to not lose against teams like Afghanistan and Bangladesh who certainly fancy their chances against a depleted and dispirited Lankan team.

Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Kusal Perera (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis (wk), Isuru Udana, Milinda Siriwardana, Avishka Fernando, Jeevan Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeffrey Vandersay, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal

They are a part of the major league now. In 2015, when Afghanistan made their debut in World Cup cricket not a lot was expected of them. In these four years, the team has earned Test status and has shown amazing ability to even upset the top teams on their day. If their performance in the Asia Cup was any indication, Afghanistan do have the capability to even go through as one of the top fours.

Squad: Gulbadin Naib (C), Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Noor Ali Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Aftab Alam, Hamid Hassan and Mujeeb ur Rahman.
